The flanger and chorus on my pedalboard.
The Electric Mistress is another classic. It showed up in early 1976, designed by David Cockerell at Electro-Harmonix, and it was one of the first flangers you could put on the floor. Andy Summers and David Gilmour are the two names most attached to it, Gilmour for the slow sweeps on the late 70s Pink Floyd records and Summers for everything from slow sweeps to shimmering chorus. This stereo version is two things in one, it's the flanger but it's also the chorus, and it has a stereo output.
Impressions
I bought it mostly because I really like the sound of a flanger. Well, I learned to like the sound of a flanger, because it's a modulation pedal, and modulation pedals usually end up being pretty weird. Kind of a Pink Floyd thing. Actually, I think it's very experimental rather than weird, and experimental is something I usually don't enjoy that much, I prefer something a bit more technical.
What I found interesting here is that you can mix the flanger with the chorus, and it gets a really strange sound, very unique I'd say, but it's pretty cool. Most of the time I only use the flanger active and I practically never use the chorus, though sometimes I invert that. You'll rarely need a flanger with a chorus, that's extremely rare, so you'll be using a flanger and a chorus at different moments, which means I have two pedals for the price of one.
The other advantage is the stereo output. I can have the two channels of the flanger and the two channels of the chorus in separate places, if I wanted to plug them into another delay pedal or something else that's stereo too. I've never seen the need to use that so far, but maybe that's because I'm not a power user of these things, so it's not my use case. Or maybe I just never discovered the use case.
It's an excellent pedal. I really like Electro-Harmonix pedals because they're very well built and they're very beautiful too. I rarely use this one, and when I do I use the flanger on a clean sound, because I think it sounds a lot more like air than like a modulated sound. Different from a phaser, for example, which I find extremely weird. So it's an interesting pedal, I use it very little, but it's a great pedal and the sound quality is very good.
