Description
A digital caliper for my electronics bench, for measuring parts when I'm designing enclosures to 3D print.
This was a second purchase. I already had a plastic caliper that I bought two or three years ago, super cheap, because I needed to measure one specific thing and there was no other way to measure it. Then I got into the 3D printing and CAD hobby and I started needing to measure things with a lot more precision.
Impressions
The plastic one wasn't very good for that, mostly because it wasn't easy to move. It kept dragging, and when I moved the head it ended up moving more than I wanted. I didn't like it much, and after a few tries at measuring and failing I swapped it for this metal one.
It's a professional looking caliper, it even came in a nice little box, but it's an entry level one. It isn't as precise as the more professional calipers, though I don't need that precision. Two or three decimal places is plenty for me, and this one has three if I'm not mistaken. The others have four or five, which is absurd, and I really don't need it.
It's very well built and it's bigger than the other one, 15 centimetres instead of 10, so I can measure a lot more things. It also does depth measurement, which my other one didn't. I wanted a digital one because I can't read a Vernier scale very well, and even though this one has the scale too, I can't really do it. I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I didn't want to learn that either, and digital is much better for me.
There are a couple of things I really like about it. First, the lock on top, so I can push it, lock it, and it won't move, which gets me much more precise measurements. Then there's a wheel underneath that I can roll to pull it very slightly to the sides, so there's a fine adjustment there too. It's very well made, and being all metal it slides much better. Every now and then I put some oil on it so it slides a bit more, and it's all good.
I don't think I'll ever replace this caliper in my life, because I don't have the uses and I don't imagine I'll ever have enough use for it.
